How getting the light right, might just help you sleep better.
You’ve bought the house, or maybe even built your Hamptons dream – you’ve probably spent many hours dwelling over storage, kitchen countertops, cabinetry, paint, and furniture. Only once you’ve settled into life do you realise the kind of lighting you need and the type of light that makes your house a home.
A Coastal style might be inspired by the sea. Unfortunately, we can’t all live by the ocean, or live somewhere tropical with long bright days of sunlight. So, how you light, and what you light with deserves some focus.
In this day and age, we are all hyperstimulated with technology and insomnia is a problem for many. The blue light from our LED televisions, phones, iPads, etc. isn’t great for our health, but something we can’t really avoid in the screen time era we’re living in.
There are however a couple of ways to use lighting to add warmth to your home and minimise harshness.
- At night turn off your overhead lighting and instead light up some lamps. You may notice significant differences in your sleep, thanks to better melatonin rhythms. The blue light produced from LED actually works on dissolving the sleep hormone melatonin that our bodies naturally produce. That’s why when you wake up in the morning and step into the light, your body typically begins the process of waking.
- Lamps can help zone your spaces. You might want a conversation space in your lounge room, so position some chairs facing each other with a lamp to help illuminate. Maybe some tall floor lamps for reading under or lamps along a hall to light your way.
- You’ve chosen some gorgeous prints or art for your walls, but without light to show it off, it just fades into the background. Make friends with a good electrician, and you can create a gallery space using lights to show off your gorgeous coastal art.
- In a dining space, you have the opportunity to go bold with a decorative pendant, you don’t necessarily need it to be bright or function focused. Pendants suit any large dining space, and the selection available on That Coastal Look give a relaxed coastal vibe and also work beautifully in a boho setting. Or why not create a magical coastal boho abode by the ocean. Coho anyone?
Here are some lights from That Coastal Look, perfect for adding that soft summery vibe, all year round.
This Coral lamp would be a beautiful and subtle feature on a side table in your lounge room, accompanied with some books. A lovely nod to the sea in your modern coastal home.
